CHR Book Launch: Christopher Morris, "Biotraffic: Medicines and Environmental Governance in the Afterlives of Apartheid"

Please join us for a CHR Book Launch!

Christopher Morris, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, in conversation with Niklas Hultin, Associate Professor (Global Affairs), will discuss his new book, Biotraffic: Medicines and Environmental Governance in the Afterlives of Apartheid, published by University of California Press.

Global conservation initiatives are increasingly tied to pharmaceutical companies' search for biodiversity to develop new drugs, and this connection often plays out in regions grappling most with enduring colonial legacies. Through immersive ethnographic research, Morris's book examines how international conservation policies and pharmaceutical demands reshape local landscapes and power structures in post-apartheid South Africa.

At this book launch, our speakers will explore the ways these dynamics play out in regions still navigating deep historical inequalities, revealing how local struggles over land and identity are intertwined with capitalist extraction and environmental policy.
