CHR Book Launch: Stephen Robertson's "Harlem in Disorder"

Monday, September 23, 2024 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM EDT
Hybrid Event in Horizon Hall 6325 and on Zoom

Join us for a CHR Book Launch!

Stephen Robertson, Professor of History, in conversation with Scott W. Berg, faculty in English, will discuss his new digital monograph, Harlem in Disorder, published by Stanford University Press and available open access.

An interactive and annotatable spatial analysis of the Harlem riot of 1935 utilizing maps, images, text, and web links, Robertson's monograph asks important questions not only about the events and aftermath of the riot but also about the present and future of digital scholarship itself: as print-on-paper ceases to be the default platform for historical argument, how do we best blend form, content, research methods, and software to tap new information and understandings? In this sense, Harlem in Disorder is an experiment, or laboratory, that emphasizes the challenges and opportunities of re-conceptualizing scholarship, and a call to think again about what we might be missing through our allegiance to traditional academic publishing platforms.

This event is hybrid- please join our speakers in Horizon Hall 6325 OR on zoom (link will be circulated via car's newsletter. Non-subscribers may request a link: chr@gmu.edu).
