Indigenous Ways of Knowing Reading Group
Wednesday, February 7, 2024 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM EST
Hybrid Horizon Hall 3225 and on Zoom
This semester, the Indigenous Ways of Knowing Reading Group will be exploring indigenous activism on Turtle Island and across the globe. Through these works, we hope to look at indigenous activism—its key tenets, its legacy, its endurance—and discuss indigeneity and decolonization in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The works chosen for this semester are designed to provide a basis for indigenous activism in North America since the 1970s, with particular focus on the last decade. All are welcome to join, regardless of your existing knowledge of indigeneity. This is a space of welcoming, respect, and vulnerability, and all are encouraged to come ready with open minds and hearts.
In this session we will discuss Dina Gilio-Whitaker's As Long as Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, from Colonization to Standing Rock (Boston: Beacon Press, 2019). Physical copy available through GMU Library.
This reading group is being conducted in conjunction with the IndigenoUs Northern Virginia Project, which aims to bring the Mason community into contact with site-specific and community-based indigenous knowledge and history to activate a too-often submerged Native American presence on campus and in the region.
