In April 2024, the Center for Humanities Research launched an anonymous 16-question survey to solicit feedback from the George Mason community about its impact. We conducted this survey in accordance with our original benchmarks/work plan as outlined in our Center proposal document with the double aim of capturing perceptions of the CHR among Mason community members as well as sourcing ideas for programming, new reading groups, and future annual themes.

The results of the survey reflect what we suspected to be true: that the CHR has produced significant value for the university. We measure the ROI of the humanities not simply in sponsored research but in relation to the groundbreaking work produced by scholars in their fields that elevates George Mason’s reputation nationally and internationally. Humanities scholarship, along with the successful mentoring of doctoral students in the humanities, has played—and will continue to play—a key role in George Mason’s R1 status.
